SUBANG JAYA, March 11: YB Hannah Yeoh, Subang Jaya Assemblyperson, utilised RM20,000 allocation for 2011 to fund an exercise programme held at the SS13 Millennium Park.

This programme is undertaken by Daily Muscle Athletic Consulting.

A year’s worth of aerobics exercise equates to 52 weeks. A twice weekly session means there are 104 sessions.

With about 50 participants for each session, this totals to RM3.85 per person. Even if only 30 participants turn up, the price is still reasonable at RM6.41 per person.

This is an unbelievably low price (about the cost of a plate of noodles) but the best part is anyone can join the exercise programme for free.

“The Selangor state government gives every assemblyman RM500,000 a year to do programmes in their area that will benefit the people.

“This year I’ve pumped in another RM20,000 for the entire year,” said YB Hannah Yeoh.

This year the exercise programme is held twice a week. One morning session on Saturday and another night session targeted at youths on Wednesday.

She said she hopes more young people turn up.

“Maybe the young people are just busy working or after working they are just really tired,” she said.

Her inspiration for this project was due to Barisan National government which had spent about RM3 million on the Millennium Park in the past and ended up to be a white elephant.

She said the project was expensive and really an eyesore.

“It was abandoned and my immediate aim at the time was to clean up that area,” she said.

In 2009 on World Environmental Day YB Hannah Yeoh and SS13 residents restored the Millennium Park into a green area. In July 2010, she launched the free exercise programme.

“We wanted a programme that everybody can utilise and also to promote healthy living and that’s when the exercise programme came about,” she said.

“I wanted a package for young and old and suitable for all races,” she said. That was how aerobics exercise was chosen for this programme.

Her major challenge was getting funding and convincing Majlis Perbandaran Subang Jaya (MPSJ) that the funds which they won from Kementerian Perumahan dan Kerajaan Tempatan (KPKT) at the federal level should be channelled into restoring the Millennium Park.

“We took about one year to push them to clear the thing and the fund came at the right time,” she said.

She said that it would depend on the people whether the programme becomes permanent.

“As long as the people come out and as long as the people want it I will continue and as long as I have the funds, I will make sure that this money goes back for the benefit of the people,” she said.

She said her future plans for the Millennium Park was for more people to utilise it and perhaps plant more trees in the area.
